July 17, 200520 yr I'm looking for someone who is familiar with the shift linkage on a 91 Legacy, AWD, auto. Or someone who has a factory picture. Mine is binding up. I know there are rust issues. Question: Is there a cable involved? Has anyone ever had to replace the shift linkage? WD-40 or some such thing may be all it needs. When I have the tranny out, I would like to take care of this problem too. If anyone has a picture of the shift linkage, it would be much appreciated. Thanks!!
July 18, 200520 yr hmm...dont have a picture...but yes there is a cable involved. The gear selector pulls a cable which is on the passenger side of the transmission. check for binding there.....i may be able to do a picture in a few days....
July 19, 200520 yr Author Actually, I was looking more for a diagram, like from a subaru factory manual. I'm not sure a photo will show everything i'm looking for.
July 22, 200520 yr Author Interesting update... apparently the cause of a stiff shift cable on the automatics is a ground problem! The dealer says that the ground connection gets loose...several possible locations...and then the tranny starts finding its ground through the shift cable, burning it from the inside out. Have to fix the ground first, then replace the cable. Back to work.
