July 28, 200520 yr Im a new-comer to this site with a 1999 Subaru Legacy Outback. I was just wondering how often should I change my air filter (under the hood) and my oil filter?
July 28, 200520 yr I change my oil and oil filter every 3 months or 3,000 miles, and I always use genuine Subaru filters. I have K&N air filters in my cars and they haven't been in use long enough to clean them yet; otherwise, I change paper air filters every 30,000 miles or when they are dirty.
July 28, 200520 yr Sorry, but whats a fram filter? Thx for all the info though! Fram is a company that makes bad filters.
July 28, 200520 yr Geniune Subaru filters are very good and not too expensive in my opinion. Oil and filter should last 6000 miles easily if you are a running a good quality oil. 3k changes are only for cars that see trackdays often. Air filter is between the same 6k or up to 18k if you rarely experience dust. Both should be done once a year, whatever the mileage.
July 30, 200520 yr whats wrong with fram? In all of the stduies I have read, Fram tests out very poorly. I use Purolator as these test out consistently very near the top.
July 30, 200520 yr Fram filters actually filter pretty well, but the construction and reliability is very poor. They are famous for causing startup noise due to all of the oil draining out of them. Mobil 1 (using one on the Jeep) Purolator (in the queue for the Jeep) Napa Gold (Wix) (in the queue for the Jetta) Hastings (using one on the Jetta) Baldwin Amsoil (using one on the Subaru, made by Hastings) These are my favorites for value and performance, but certainly there are some other good ones out there.
