tranny help (resolved)

Featured Replies

I installed an EA81 engine from a 1984 fwd wagon into my 82 BRAT

Used the BRAT flywheel and clutch.

When I put the BRAt into gear, it doesn't move when I gas it. It merely revs. He speedometer goes up so I guess there is power going to the tranny, but not the wheels. When I yank the 4WD level, it will grind pretty badly. 4wlo is even worse.

Tried to adjust the 4wd linkage, nothing,

Someone mentioned that the EA81 4wd bellhousing is different from the 2wd bellhousing.

Also someone mentioned that the throwout bearing may not be lined up correctly.

NEED HELP.

Please call me if you have any ideas (310)292-5258

Thanks

bipity bumpity...

Well... before I yank the tranny off to see what's up....

Two suggestions I have so far is clutch cable too tight and axle was pulled apart when I jacked the tranny to high.

I am not sure it's the axles being pulled apart since I don't get any grinding or unusual noise when it's in 2wd and reving.

I will undo the clutch cable and see if I can get it to move.

If not then I am going to have to take the tranny down and have a look see.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Sk'o,

Do you have any jack stands?

Could you put stands under the front wheels and turn the tires and see what happens?

I'm wondering if there would be any noises or if they spin in opposite directions?

That may help to point you in the right direction on where to begin?

Good Luck,

Glenn

problem resolved.

Thanks to Richie Rich, Flowmaster, Will Smith and Sweet for help on this.

It turned out to be two seperate problems.

1) Front driver CV joint was broken. Thus in 2wd power went to the broken axle and it just spun. Haven't fixed this yet, but will need to do an axle replacement.

2) 4wd linkage arm was bent. It prevented the car from completely shifting into 4wd. fixed by loosening the pivot point. tapping the selector level all the way forward and then adjusting the pivot to the right distance.

I am working on a short throw shifter. I extended the level below the pivot by 1/2 an inch or so. Will have to adjust the arm to keep the same shifting angles but it should work. will take pics.
