AC system removal

Recommended Posts

I have an 88 RX with non-working AC due to compressor-pulley area. It is the rectangular compressor, outside of the alternator. I am pulling the engine, and having AC lines out of the way would make it much easier.

You are supposed to take it to a professional for depressurization and stuff, but I want it out now. I've spent several hours on dial-up looking for info, and now I am asking.

How do I do it the right way? The wrong way?

If all you are looking to do is to pull the engine without the A/C lines being an issue, just unbolt the A/C compressor mount-bracket from the engine and swing the compressor/lines/bracket over to the strut tower or battery-tray area.

When the engine goes back in, just swing the A/C works back into place.

I have done that already. But one of the line is still kind of in the way, annoying.

I do not want non-functioning AC taking up space and weight in the car.

It is a bad idea to let anyone stand behind your shoulder while you vent r12! Releasing r134a is legal is most states I think, but venting freon should not be done, with anyone looking. If you talk to a shop that has the machine to evac r12 and it's pure, I'm sure they would be more than happy to.
