no ATF Filter?

Featured Replies

I ordered an ATF filter for my 1991 Legacy, and wanted to use it on the 96...if I buy it. Dealer does not have a listing for a tranny filter on a 96 2.2L legacy. Doens't make sense...I hope there is a tranny filter on the 96 somewhere. any ideas? Thanks.

No filter. There is a screen in the pan, that doesn't need to be seviced.

You could put the early Legacy ATF filter retrofit kit on if you really want one.

The add on "filter" kit was a retrofit due to early manufacturing issues with the auto trans. It was meant to catch larger particles, and is similar to the screen in the tranny.

It's not really needed on the newer models.

is there any advantage/disadvantage between the filter and the screen? Is one better than the other...or just different? Just curious.

They all have the pickup screen in the pan. There were problems with early transmissions, and Subaru issued the retrofit filter in order to prolong the life of the transmissions. They changed whatever was causing the problems in I believe MY 94 so that the extra filter was no longer needed. All I'm saying is if you feel the need you could probably install one on a later car. It is unessasary though.

I would feel better installing one. Subaru put a spin on filter on the NEWWER 4EAT's from teh factory!! Must be something good to have them!
