On an 85 GL, when I put it in 4x4 low, is there supposed to be a light on the dash that lights up? The 4x4 high green light lights up but no Low light. Thanks.

yes there is, mine doesn't lite up anymore when in low since my shifter boot came loose from the console but i can stick my finger in through the boot on the left side and touch a tang that must be on the end of the switch and it will go on. so, that could be bent or your switch could be bad.

So does it still work though without the light? How can you tell if its still working?

yes it will, if you have a tach you will know if your in low because it will rev up fast when driving then it would normally, if you don't have a tach you should be able to hear the engine rev faster and higher sooner then normal when you are in 2wd.

if you can only go about half as fast as normal in any gear, you're in 4lo. Although, since this is the lever shifter, and not vacuum operated, it's pretty much safe to say that if the shifter is in gear, you'd be in 4lo (so it will work with the light off).
