Rear Brakes on 98 Forester

Featured Replies

I just replaced the rear brake pads on a 98 Forester S.When driving down the road,I get a metal screeching noise..unless I apply gentle pressure to the brakes and it goes away. Are there shims I may have forgotten to install?

Yes. Did you use a genuine Subaru pad Kit? Those shims come with the kit.

Those shims even come with the cheapy kits in my experience. Look around your work space and in the trash - you may find them. Also spray some Brake Quiet onto both sides of the shim before installing.

While there can be a little noise for the first few stops while the pads 'wear in' ,if you've never done a brake job before, I can see where it would be easy to throw the shims/plates away accidently. Everything's the same color and those shims are stuck on sometimes with the anti'rattle grease/stuff so it isn't obvious it's a seperate component. I dunno about a metallic screeching - more like squealing. Still, quite likely.
