Got a 92 Loyale EA82. Replacing all the seals, belts, pumps, etc. I've removed the cam sprockets to replace cam seals, gettin ready to put it all back together, and now I notice that in my manual it says to line up the marks on the cam sprockets to the notches on the top of the t. belt cover. But there are no marks on any of the sprockets whatsoever. So whats the best way to go about getting it back in time? I don't want to take the valve covers off to do it that way. I've heard that you can put your thumb over the spark plug hole in cyl 1, turn the crank and stop when you feel pressure. But how do you know if it's on the compression or exhaust stroke? Can anyone walk me through this?

i'd check the cam sprockets again, seeing the marks on them is the best way to do this. t-belts have to be exact, i don't see that happening using the TDC method....i have the FSM and know what it says, but you need to find those cam marks. did you install the cams backwards or something? do you know what the marks look like, they are smallish.

The camshaft sprockets have a small hole in it near the outside edge. They should also have a key on them so they can only be installed one way onto the camshaft itself.

 

You shouldn't need to find TDC unless you took the distributor out?

 

There is a different procedure you need to follow to re-install the timing belts though. A search should find that guide, and if not, I'm sure someone else can post it here.

I'll check the sprockets again tonite for the markings. Hopefully then I can just follow the manual.

Yeah I guess the small hole near the outside edge of the sprocket is the timing mark. It lines up with the key hole on the inner sprocket edge too, so that's what I'm going to use to align it...we'll see if it runs!
