clutch replacement 99 Forester

Featured Replies

Hi all --

I have a 99 Forester (L) that is in bad shape at the moment. The clutch stopped working on Thursday -- the clutch pedal essentially stuck to the floor and would not return to it's regular position. On Fri morning I found that I could not even put the car in gear & had to have it towed in to the dealership. After inspection, the mechanic told me that everything had to be replaced, incl. pressure plate, clutch, etc. The guy quoted me $1600 for parts and replacement. He mentioned other parts besides the clutch, but I was still in shock about the price... he said something about the plate falling off and burning up the clutch. I don't know much about cars, and being female, I'm always concerned that I'm going to get taken for a ride. Does that $$ amount sound right, or should I be concerned about him charging too much?

Thanks!

Holly

I would first have the clutch slave and master cyl checked. This would only be a couple of hundered if that is what it is. There have been many clutchs replaced in error for failed hydraulic parts.

It is true that a 99 would likely be ready for a clutch by now. I'm not sure about prices in your area but that seems a bit high, but perhaps they are reccomending all the service items like seals, belts, reseal the oil pump, the plastic plate on the rear of the engine, etc. If so this would be about right.

What are the "other parts". No matter how you cut it that sounds at least 800.00 too high to me. You need to get a second opinion.
