Difference between FT4WD and Part time 4WD trans?

Featured Replies

i read through all the archived posts with "transmission" in the title.

I currently have a FT4WD (from XT Turbo) but should be getting a push button 4WD from an 89 XT. Any differences between the two? the push button 4WD will be FWD unless i push the button? would that get better gas mileage than my FT4WD? i'm wanting to gear this XT for optimum gas mileage. anyone know what the final drive raio's are in 5th gear for these trans? i don't think my 89 FSM mentioned the push button but i'll check again (at work right now).

all offroading, snow driving is done and will be done in my XT6 so i don't necessarily need maximum 4wheel drive capability.

the PT 4WD has a button...where is it, on the stick shift? anything else i'd need?

Gary, the gas mileage may be a wee bit better but not great.

Yes the pushbutton is on the shift lever but can be put anywhere.

You will need the control solenoids

I have an article that lays out the electro mechanical aspects of the system.

I will email it to you if you like.

Here is a chart of gear ratios from the USRM

http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/USRM2/Transmission/gear85fsm.jpg

Where on the car are these control solenoids located? Are they the gizmos bolted to the trans behind the starter?

skip - awesome i would definitely like to see that trans info. my email is fine grossgary AT yahoo DOT com if you can't get the link to work from my name.

couldn't quite make sense of the gear ratio chart - is that for all EA82's? my car is an 87.5 XT Turbo (i'll be running NA though) with FT4WD and the PT4WD trans is a 1989. that chart doesn't distinguish between FT4WD and PT4WD. there's only one 5 speed option for single range 4WD.

i have an XT service manual (at home) with that same chart info, i'll check it out next time i'm home.

Steve, the control solenoids are in front of the wiper motor

on L series cars

Will do Gary, give me a shout if there is something about

the repair article you don't understand.

Any idea where they are on an XT, so I can snag them for Gary before it gets crushed?

Find the large vacuum diaphragm on top side of the tranny, the one with the cable to the 4wd shift lever.

Follow the vacuum lines back, they will end at the control solenoids.

Get him the cylindrical white connector and some of the wiring off the main harness.

Is the highest gear ratio (5th gear) still the same between the two or is one geared different than the other?

(i have a 1987.5 XT Turbo FT4WD trans and 1987 PT4WD trans)

is the PT4WD a 3.7 diff ratio?

can the PT4WD lock the center diff?

The PT4WD I gave you has a 3.7 final drive, yes. The ones out of DL's and Loyales though, those have a 3.9.

When you engage 4WD in a PT4WD, it'll run exactly like a FT4WD with the diff locked. The difference is when 4WD is disengaged, it runs 2 wheels instead of 4.
