EA82 MAF Modificatin?

Featured Replies

I own a 92 Loyale and I've searched and come up with nothing on the subject so I'll just ask... Has anyone tried to modify the MAF on their intake? The intake system on these things are the most restrictive I have ever seen! The MAF has like a inch and a half opening! I was thinking about taking the sensor out and placing it in a pipe. But would I have to simulate the smaller upper hole that the hotwire sits in? If I do I thought I could maybe make some kind of "T" fitting that is the same diameter as the small hole in the MAF for the hotwire to sit in... Anyone have any thoughts or insight on this? Or has anyone else done this using a different method?

Thanks for the help

I may be making up stuff here, but from what I know of the MAF it is a hot wire anemometer unit, which means it's actually measuring the velocity of the air flowing over it. If you put it in a larger pipe, the velocity would be smaller, and it wouldn't give enough fuel unless you recalibrated it somehow. This is the general theory of hot wire MAF's -- I'm just not sure if this is how the subaru works or not. You are right, it would be nice to have less restrictive opening to get a little more volumetric efficiency.

hate to say it, but you'd have to increase airflow quite a bit everywhere else for this to become the restriction. if you're looking for power, get a better coil, plugs and wires. exhaust is the biggest improvement you can make on these engines, maybe some cams from www.deltacams.com. either way, starting with a 90 hp 4 cyl, you will never get "mad" power, unless you swap in a turbo, and there you are doing a custom jobber, no off the shelf parts.

Right, that's why I'm thinking of making some kind of "T" fitting with the same inside diameter so that it wouldn't need calibration...
