why is it in the manual it mentions a 4 wheel lock option? shows it as a knob in the middle console. Never seen it.... maybe just an option in Japan or something?? It's an 87 GL with original manual.

The locking option is on Full-Time 4WD trannies and it locks the center diff. Typically the front/rear is split 70/30, when you lock it goes to 50/50 like part-time 4WD. I know the FT4WD trans was available in the RX (with a lo range) and the GL-10, I have never seen one in a GL.

they don't have a split, its an open diff, power goes wherever whenever.

i'll get the manual later and look into it more closely

Yes, that's the diff lock knob, and it's only on full time 4WD models- certain turbo cars and the RX. As JWX said the car has an open AWD trans and the power is distributed to any of the axles at any given time. This lock switch locks it into 50/50 LOCKED distribution, just like a regular 4WD with 4WD engaged.

 

Your car most likely has a dual range trans, which means it's normally in FWD. When you lift the 4WD lever it locks it into 4WD, which makes it run just like a car with the diff lock engaged.
