if the drive axle can't be removed from the wheel assembly using a gear puller or a sledge hammer, how can you remove it? please help.

I dont remember each and ever step but I removed mine with the help of the Haynes manuel, it was rather simple. I do know you must loosen the axle nut, (not much) then raise the car and remove the spring pen on the end near the trans. You also have to remove the bolt that clamps the ball joint, then seperatae it. their is also one more bolt to be removed I think it is the one on the stabilize link. (Do a search on this with search feature.) After you get this then remove the axle nut and swing front hub assm. around that should pull the axle loose from trans. then you can pull it out from the hub, here you may need punch and hammer. I didn't mine came right out.

I've already tried all that, based on the repair manual. It's locked into the hub somehow, and won't release. The passenger side popped right out and was a snap to replace, but the drivers side is a diff story.

It wants to be difficult, spray where the spine goes into hub with P.B. blaster wait a little while and get a big hammer and punch and drive it out. If you still cant get it out take the whole hub assm. off with axle and take it somewhere and have it pressed out.

Heat will toast his bearings.

With everything still hooked up to the car, but the car up on jackstands, loosen the nut on the end of the axel. Back the nut out so that all the threads are engaged and it is flush with the end of the axel. Put a pressure treated 2x4 between the axel and your Big Fat Hammer and whale on the thing. The axel should pop out and move in about 1/2 inch. Then remove the ball joint clamp, roll pin, and yank the axel out.
