haunted hesitation

Recommended Posts

Hi all- brand new to board, and relatively new to being a happy 'baru owner. (almost a year now). the deets: '84 GL wagon, 4x4, replacement motor from Japan (EA81 or 82?- will double check tonight)

So i've been surfing and searching the old posts here and other places, and as i suspected, i'm not the only one afflicted by a hesitation and bucking under power. i figured initially it was a fuel supply issue, as it only happened uphill the first few times, and felt like an empty gas tank-bucking. now that it seems to have returned after a brief absence (warm weather turning colder?) and i can make it do the haunted hesitation going up or down hill, just as long as i get the rpm far enough up. downhill/flat seems to be at 4k or higher, and going uphill, just under 3k it'll start. this is usually in 3rd or 4th, but i can force it in second if i try hard enough... don't like doing that though. also, if i control the buck by letting off the gas it won't get worse really, but if i push it harder to really starve the motor, it worsens much more quickly.

i'm hoping experienced subie owners may know the symptoms i'm describing now, but i've seen many a thread with these symptoms from different angles, including the spark (coil, module). so while i'm now thinking vaccuum advance may not be working properly, i wanted to get some more experienced opinions on this. is it a fuel supply/carb issue? or is spark the culprit? if the latter, would you guys think it was more coil or more disty?

happy halloween to subies everywhere!
