91 Legacy 4 speed auto 2wd ???

Featured Replies

Hello to all fellow suby junkies

I did some searching in past posts but was unable to see any with these exact problems

Here is my problem

My trans has hesitation on take off but goes into gear (warm or cold)

first and second work but when I get to third it just spins freely ( in manual and auto) so no third or fourth gear period. It goes into all other gears with just a little hesitation

Here is what I have tried

Pulled the ecu tcu fuse

disconected the battery

pushed the brake to bleed the left over energy

checked the fliud level (added a quart)

checked all of the wires (looked good and all conected)

so I think next I am going to flush the lines and change both filters and pan gaskett replace the fluid

do you all have any advice

should I bother with it or just replace the trans

I also have a post in the marketplace for anyone that has one layin around that they want to part with

Thanks LT

well what does the fluid look like and smell like. My vote is you have a dying tranny and eventually you will have only 2nd and reverse.

fliud look fine maybee a little thin it smells kinda burnt

also austin has in formed me that the leagacy only comes with a four speed AT

so this means that I have no third or fourth

also I seem to be throwing code 35 but I really dont see that they are related

nipper thanks for taking the time LT

If the tranny problem started with the engine swap I would check the wireing harnes to the throttle body and the throttle body solenoid. I was fooling with mine last week and took off up the hill, only had 1st and 2nd. 3rd & 4th where like neutral. Thought that was strange as it always worked before and then I remembered I had unpluged the throttle body to see how it came apart as I was having difficulity with another one. Stopped, plugged it back in and 3rd and 4th came back! What a relief!! Could be some thing else but worth checking out. Stumpy

Well it looks like I am going to try and do a 5speed awd swap I have a 91 legacy wagon for parts

so what do ya think?

4eat>5mt swap, best thing I ever did to my 90' lego sedan, straightforeward writeup on legacy 777's website. the 2wd to awd is pretty easy on EJ series, don't think you even need to change the gas tank...

SWEEET thanks free range I looked at his write up and I think I will proceed with plan

ANY one else have 2 cents ?

yeah you need to change the gas tank when going from FWD to AWD.

The FWD to AWD part really wasn't that bad. The AT to MT is a little more involved since there's more electrical issues to deal with, but overall it's not too bad.

I could've done two AWD & 5MT conversions in the time it took me to work out all the issues with my EJ22T rebuild and swap.
