I had the same problem with mine (same model and year) since I bought it 2 1/2 years (and 70,000 miles) ago. I finally took it in, and it turns out that in addition to the bushings being completely gone, the transmission hanger bolts were broken. The dealer said it was basically resting on the exhaust. They could have been pulling my leg (and wallet) though. After replacing the parts it's perfect.

Here is another link to a shifter rebuild post. I did this in the summer, and it was a little difficult due to the cramped space under the car, but I was able to replace the necessary bushings and linkage from the ************ lever to the transmission. I have some good pics of the work I did. They used to be posted on my website, but they may have been erased. If anyone wants them or wants to host them on their website, let me know and I'll get them for you.

P.S> Here is the link to the photos I uploaded to the USMB web site:

The bushings may be an issue, but your specific issue is the centering spring is not there. You can see it in this pic

I believe there is a thread in the reviews forum on www.bbs.legacycentral.org that is titled "(correct part #) appreciation thread" I don't recall the part #, but it's in the thread.
