Legacy Turbo - XT Turbo Rear LSD's Compatable?

Featured Replies

Hi There,

Just like the title states are 91 Legacy turbo and XT turbo rear LSD's compatable? Did the XT6 have a similar rear LSD?

Thanks,

Mark

The Legacy Turbo rear diff is actually a VLSD (Viscous Limited Slip Differential), it has a 3.90 ratio. The XT4 and the rare XT6 were both just LSDs, the 4 having a 3.70 ratio and the 6 having a 3.90 ratio. The Legacy rear diff will bolt in the same place as the EA82s, but remember the turbos has a 3.70 ratio front diff in the trannys. Also the VLSD is not a good offroad diff because it requires speed to cause the friction to build in the fluid, for slow rock crawling they are basically useless. So to answer your question, if you are planning toi replace the complete rear differential in a Turbo XT4, the answer is no, wrong ratio. But you can change over just the carrier (the piece that bolts to the ring gear).

Actually I was thinking of a project car, Like an Impreza with the engine and tranny out of a Legacy turbo and an LSD in the rear. I currently have a 91 Legacy Turbo with the VLSD, but arent going to butcher this car. So I'm curious about older Suby LSD's to possibly put into it (don't want an open diff). So you say that the XT6 has a 3.9 rear LSD. Thats perfect because the Legacy diff is also 3.9, I think I'll go that route.

Thanks,

Mark

and if you actually find a xt6 with a LSD 3.90 be sure to take pictures, since we've only heard of it in the parts books....

In all of my junkyard scamperings, I have only seen an RX with an LSD, I know others could be ORDERED with the LSD (There is a wagon rolling around Albany with a 3.90 LSD, seen it with my own two eyes!) the only one that I know for sure came stock with the LSD was the RX. I've never seen a 4WD XT with LSD, maybe it was only the turbo??

The XT6 is in a yard 10 miles from my house, along with a turbo wagon and GL turbo sedan. do the other two have 3.9 LSD's as well?

Thanks

Mark,

OK so all these cars are only a maybe for LSD's <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/ohwell.gif ALT=":\">

Mark,

yep. maybe. '89 GL-10 Turbos came with a LSD stock, along with all RX's. But the LSD was an option to order... so check all :)

Do the older LSD's have the same gold sticker on the rear of the casing, identifing whether its an LSD and its ratio?

Mark,

Yes, they do, it'll say in liek 1/2" letters "LSD" ALTHOUGH I have heard that there are SOME that do NOT have the "LSD" on the sticker; if the car is off the ground, spin one side of the differential and if the other side spins the same direction, it's LSD. If it spins the opposite, it's open.

I know of several 3.90 LSDs running around, I know they are 3.90 because I converted then from a 3.90 open to a LSD using the LSD carrier from a 3.70 LSD. In fact I have one waiting to be converted as soon as the person who wants it comes up with a 3.90 open rear diff.

I have never seen a factory 3.90 LSD, but according to the parts books, one does exsist.

The SVX comes with a LSD, is that the same basic unit as the EA82? Would the guts transfer over? I know they are a odd ratio.

rXSNRG, I think if you check it out, the LSD in a SVX will be a VLSD. But, yes the guts (carrier) transfer. I believe the ration is something like a 3.54 or maybe 3.51, yea, it is weird, but then the bolt pattern is also unique to that car.

My 87 4wd turbo sedan will have 3.70 ratio, right? That won't be a problem finding a 3.70 LSD But for my BRAT I would have to convert it. I know the BRAT is correct but my sedan is 3.70 right?

To answer your question though, none. (since this is the old gen forum, this fact can only be applied to old gens)

Well, I wouldn't be too sure about that, the problem is that none that came to the USA had front LSDs, there were several in Japan that had them, and even a few that got exported to places like the UK, NZ and Aus had them.
