Is the rear end in my non-turbo loyal the same as a turbo model? Could I just swap the rears out without modifying anything else?

If that is the case, check the stickers on the back of the diff cover, and if the numbers match, it should work. They should say either 3.700 or 3.900

Your transmission differential must match the rear diff ratio, you cannot mix different ratios.

 

 

The rear diff in your non-turbo is 3.90 and the turbo's use 3.70 so it wont work unless you swap the tranny with a turbo tranny.

My tranny is 3.900 and the diff is too AND I have a turbo wagon (dual range swap).

But get this, my 1983 green subaru GL wagon I bought for $350 was an automatic. The guy was pissed that he kept going through automatic trannies all the time. I didn't know of this board when i got the car. It didn't go into 3rd...so I adjusted the bands according to the Haynes Manual, it worked. I drove the car for about 6 months and used it in the sand (4wd) a lot. And one time when my friend and I were going fast down gravel roads (not rallying because a Rally is an organized event where people's safety is held to higher standards) in 4wd and then I goton the asphault, where I put it in 2wd and then my car would stutter from shifting from 1rst to 2nd. I didn't want to try to fix the tranny. So I found this board and learned that I can convert it to a 4spd D/R tranny. I got a list of all the required parts and then I checked my rear diff for the hell of it...it was a 3.900. I don't get why it was....with an automatic and all. SO I think that was the reason for the tranny failure.

Moral of the story? You can put a 3.9 diff to a 3.7 tranny and have it drive...for a little bit. But I heard if you put a 3.9 diff to a 3.7 tranny...and engage 4wd...you're gunna be hurting.

The non-turbo gear ratio is 3.9:1 and the turbo is 3.7:1. You have to match the trans, but you can use a turbo differential in a non-turbo and vice versa if you swap out the ring gear. Lots of articles here on the board on how to do it.
