I have a 92 Loyale Wagon that has the catalatic converter right under the front axel and U-joint.

 

I have read many complaints about this design and that the heat damages the parts above it, so I frabricated a heat-shield, which helps a little.

 

FACT:

I have read that using an "insulating exhaust wrap" can help reduce engine compartment tempatures, prevent heat damage to parts, and improve HP by reducing exhaust restriction.

 

QUESTION:

So... what if I used insulating exhaust wrap on the cat instead of the metal heat shield? If I wrap just the cat, will that overheat it and damage it? Do I have to wrap all the pipes from the engine back to the muffler? Are there really any HP gains?

Most people just use it on headers to keep the heat in the headers and not heat up the engine compartment. I would think you could use it from the heads back and up to the cat, but I wouldn't cover the cat with it. After the Cat I wouldn't think its needed.

 

Be aware that reports of metal fatique from overheating have been coming back. This is usually from people who spend big bucks on headers only to have them crack and crystalize from overheating with the wrap in place. Its more of a race application thing and I've not heard many using it on a daily driver.

 

I think your heat sheild idea is the better option.
