need some input???? " Fixed"!!!!!

i got a 92 loyale wagon today,it's backfiring from the intake when you give it gas,it's got 149k on it.i don't have any other information on it.i got it at a auction and it was a purple heart donation.evrything works on it including the 4wd.where should i start the troubleshooting.thanks Bill.

 

i did not write that the wagon has fuel injection.

Does it start easily? Does it idle? How well? Will it drive, or does the backfiring start when trying to get it off of idle?

 

Another possibility is sparkplug wires getting switched.

 

If the car is hard starting and rough idling, the first thing to do is check the timing belts (#1 cause of people tossing away a good Subaru). Then, check ignition components (especially plugs and wires) and settings.

 

The ignition timing has to be set in a particular way on the SPFI Subarus: A pair of single-wire, green connectors near the wiper motor have to be connected prior to setting the timing. This tells the Engine Control Unit (ECU) to stop fiddling with the electronically controlled timing so that you can set the base timing. (Don't forget to disconnect when done.)

it starts on the 2nd or 3rd try,it idles on it's own and smooth,when you go quick on the idle it will backfire and die.i drove it but it takes a while to get it up to speed.thank you for the green test conectors because i am going to check the timing and and all the wires. try

sounds just like my 91 loyale did when the timing was at 0* TDC :eek:

Setting the time made it sound/run much happier :-)

thanks for everyones input.they had 2 wires crossed and had the distr. bolts loose.put the timing at 20 Degr. put wires back to where they where ment to be and now after i drove it for 10 miles,it runs like a Champ.time will tell if it was worth the $300.00 dollars i paid for it.it came from burt subaru in colorado, and it's rust free.thanks again to all and

So it runs good now... of course its worth $300... even if it had 400,000 miles on it, a running rust free subaru still has a certain value to it.

 

Glad to hear you got it running. If you decide to keep it, consider swapping the timing belts and the oil pump seals if you cant find any record of when it was last done.

i'll keep it around for a while,when it gets warmer i'll do all the maintance stuff.Bill
