Legacy 250T (EJ25) Broken Camshaft Pulley

Merry Christmas All!

Well it hasn't been the best Christmas for me this year. Last night (Christmas Eve) 400 meters from home my Subaru started making a very loud noise and I immediately pulled it over to the side of the road while at the same time putting it in to neutral. The engine died and there was a smell like burning hot clutch or brakes. I had no idea what was going on. At the time I had just finished rounding a round-a-bout and was gently accelerating (not much load on the engine - maybe 2-3K revs)

At first I thought it was something to do with the transmission (Auto) so I tried to turn it over, but the noise was immediate and I stopped (nothing to do with the transmission!). Next I open the bonnet and flicked the engine over with the starter and stopped. I heard something I didn't want to hear. The noise was coming from the timing belt area at the front of the engine. $$$ flashed pass me :(

I eventually got my car home (kind neighbour). I pulled off the plastic cover from the left side and found the Camshaft bolt had snapped and the Pulley broken in half and get this…. the belt was still intact :confused:

Can anyone tell me with what I've described if there will be considerable damage? Like bent valves, punctured pistons etc?

Thanks in advance!

Regards

You need to get a new pully and belt and put it back together then you can try and start it or at least check the compression. I lost a 1997 2.2 engine when the idle pully came apart, the valves and piston collided. Hopefully you will have better luck.

Sounds like you very likely have a seized cam. Unfortunately this isn't all that uncommon, and we think it's due to lack of oiling to that cam.

And yes, you have, at the very least, bent valves.

Merry *#^#% Christmas :banghead::(:mad:
