I tried to search this subject, but couldn't find anything.

 

I have heard that the 02-03 WRX steering wheel will connect directly to the '97 Legacy w/o any modifications and I would really like to do this since it really won't be that expensive.

 

I have the opportunity to buy an 04 WRX steering wheel for a respectable price.

 

Will either of these really work?

It should fit on the splines. The only issue you may have is if the cruise control lever is different or interferes.

 

On the first gen legacy the cruis control set/resume stalk is on the steering wheel. Not sure if the 97 is the same, and if so, if the WRX is, and would it have the same wiring connector to hook it up.

Thank you, Josh. I managed to find an 03 WRX wheel for a decent price. It has the same cruise control switch, etc... I will post updates and pics after the initial install. I have to say that I am a bit nervous about the air bags.

Yeah I forgot about them....my doesn't have them.

 

 

You just need to make sure the system is discharged before messing with it. I don't specifically know how to do that, but maybe someone else does.

You'll be able to swap the cruise stalks easily if needed. I did so on my SVX.
