January 4, 200620 yr Hi there, I have an '02 Forester that I adore. In the last month, the rearview mirror has a strange thing going on. A small oval section at the top of the mirror is clear and easy-to-see out of. The rest of the mirror is dark and has a a double-vision thing happening. It's like the dimmer has just gone wrong. I don't know if it is temperature related, but the shape and size of the good/bad viewing areas changes. Sadly, the good area is much smaller than the bad. Thanks for any help, Chris
January 4, 200620 yr Sorry Chris, no way to Fix this, it must be replaced. Either a standard mirror, or another auto-dimming mirror. Bet the compass still works! Any Subaru dealer, website or maybe even Ebay may have one. List is 'about' $149. Simple to replace. No tools required. I had the same thing in My02 Forester, but it happened while under warrenty.
January 4, 200620 yr And it's not just Subaru. Several companies have this problem. Somtimes it seems features are just not ready for prime time. If it were mine it would get a standard mirror.
January 4, 200620 yr Oh by the way, the auto dimming mirror from my BMW is in the closet in the garage and an Oldsmobile one is on the car with an adapter.
January 6, 200620 yr This isn't a case of the mirror being flipped over for bright light compensation by chance, is it? Is there a place to get a standard mirror with the compass option?
January 6, 200620 yr This isn't a case of the mirror being flipped over for bright light compensation by chance, is it? Yep. My ADM hasn't dimmed in some time, but I don't feel like paying big bucks to replace it.
