January 29, 200620 yr On my 81, I am having a continuous problem with the pedal support assembly deforming around the clutch cable clamp. I got the car with this pre-bent, replaced the clutch, cable, and removed and repaired the pedal support, but it is slowly bending again. Is this a somewhat common problem with these cars, or do you think it's just weak from having been bent already? All the clutch release pieces seem to be working fine now, except that I am having a harder and harder time getting full release. Should I just replace the assembly?
January 29, 200620 yr Replace the whole pedal assembly with one from an 83+ EA81. They changed the clutch cable design because of that problem so you'll need the cable to go with it. The pedal assembly isn't hard to change out really - like 4 bolts I think. GD
January 29, 200620 yr Author Yeah, I had less than an hour invested in removal, repair, and re-installation. Four brake booster nuts, two bolts at the rear, pull off the gas pedal, and it's out. Do I have to get a specific cable, there are two or three listed for that year. Anybody have this pedal assembly?
January 29, 200620 yr There are only two types of EA81 clutch cables that I know of. Difference is the mounting at the pedal. Get one for an '84 EA81 (any model), and that will be what you need. Try a pull-a-part - way cheap in WA, and pedal assembly's aren't usually a hot item.
April 17, 201213 yr Bringing this one back from the dead. The bracket for the pedal end of the clutch cable broke on my 86 Brat. I see that I could get an 84+ pedal support, but do you think it would hold if I rewelded the original one? Maybe a little improved gusseting could make it hold up or is it totally a lost cause? I have access to any equipment to do the job right. thanks.
