Advice on a Vortex

Featured Replies

Hi lads, Ive got a 87' vortex coming my way soon and as its been sitting for 2 years i have no idea whether the engine (EA82T) runs.

My First concern is the turbo - is it even going to spin? and if not i want a plan b. Could i theoretically dump all of that ECU crap and bolt a good old carb to this baby in the interests of saving the engine and the work involved with a swap.

Final question is what do you experienced people think about the price? Im paying $300 NZD for this and its got the original mags and the interior is in very good condition. Some slight exterior rust but nothing structural.

Any opinions Welcomed!

(btw this is the Vortex Waimaks mentioned earlier, were going halfs on it as a project car)

You could put a carb on it, but it would be a dog - the turbo motor has a very low comp ratio. Put some good oil in it, new petrol, and give it a go - i think you may be pleasently surprised.

Well, i'd say you're getting a pretty good deal - even if the engine is a write off.

What Ross said. Disconnect the fuel line, take off solenoid wire, hold key to start and pump most of your problems away. Hook it all back up, fresh gas, oil and fiter, and try not to bag it too hard until she knows your first name. Enjoy.

yea, i think you'd be able to pick up another turbo pretty easy, if you had a look around. but i'd only worry about that until it's a problem. just check things over first to be sure before you turn the key.

I'd say that was a good deal, for what you're getting. As long as there is not structual rust, anything is easy to fix on the cheap if you need to.

Well thanks for the speedy replies guys - assuming it does eventually run, is there any particular thing i should look out for on these old XT's?

Also a cheap bov is sitting in my garage - should i fit it (purely for the sound:brow: ) or would this cause a problem?

If you are gonna fit a blow off valve, you will have to make it a recirculating type.(as apposed to atmospheric venting) i.e. the outlet of your BOV will have to plumbed back into the intake after the MAF and before the turbo.

Otherwise the air that was measured by the MAF will be let out into the atmosphere instead of going into the engine and your engine will stumble because the excess of fuel that is injected into the intake.

Not a great explanation but i guess you get the picture

Hope you get it running:headbang:
