lifts and shocks on an ea81..

Featured Replies

i search, and searched... and did more of that, looked through all kinds of spec sheets and such (not knowing what i'm doing ofcourse)

and now i'm wondering (before i assume)

would these shocks work for a 4 inch lift on my hatch? am I reading this right? (just drill the holes out some)

monroe part #'s (the top is the one i'm looking at, the bottom is stock)

#### upper lower compressed extended travel

32205-xp7---ls14---12.875-----21.375---8.5

5914--xp13--ls29----12.75-----17.5-----4.75

or is the more Frankenstein work on the shocks a better idea?

sorry about not putting it in the old gen forum... wasn't sure where this was best suited.

damnit.i wrote a huge response to this and it got lost to the gremlins in my system i guess.find your resting rate for your vehicle.it is easy.measure from the center of your top mount to the center of your bottom mount.that rate or measurement should be in the middle of your shocks movement.if your rate at rest is say 16,you would want the compressed measurement to be 12 and the extended measurement to be 20 .or around there.a good comparison is the rancho 5241.tried and proven on our rigs with lifts on them.

it is easy to get a shock that will fit with all the perameters.but you need to pick one that will work for what you want to do with it.granted , you can get a shock for an early model chevelle,it will fit,but it was designed for a rear wheel drive ,torque oriented situation.very stiff at some points, and loose at others.usually gas shocks.

or you can get some stock shocks from a jeep wrangler tj series after 95 that will bolt right on and give a 4x feel.

the thing about shocks is ,they are mostly designed for the specific weight of a vehicle....so when you are trying to cross breed your vehicles suspension you have to take that into account.i suggest you do more research before you take someone elses advice, for no other reason but to understand what you are doing to your car so that you are not surprised when it handles differently, and why
