How do you get to the ashtray light on the 96 outback ? I took ashtray out and cant se a thing in there. Where is the bulb ? thanks

if it's like the previous gen legacies, you have to take out the cover/metal piece that the ashtray slides into.

 

On mine, there's one screw in the back and two screws that face upwards.

Exactly, just loosen the screw in the back, don't remove it.
