  1. I lucked out. It was the right side inner end of the CV joint. No ripped boot just bad bearings inside shaft causing all the problems.
  2. If you have some good lighting I would love to see as many pics you can take while doing this job. Good luck
  3. Thanks for all the replies. Will check the CV joint. Autozone owes me one at no cost. Checked diff fluid and reads full. Fluid that leaked from seal was thick and silver looking, almost the color of liquid solder. Once I take off the CV I can grab hold the stub and see if it has play up and down. All i can do is hope for the best. Wish all you guys a safe and happy New Year.
  4. 2001 Outback wagon VDC 3.0. Right side front differential leak and thumping noise.Had whole car up off ground and ran it in drive. Can see right cv joint bounce up and down.Is there a way to tighten that play up or do i need to replace trans ??? Also will any front differential from a 2.5 fit that trans or does it have to be from a 3.0 trans also ??? Garry you have a trans sitting around ?
  5. 2001 VDC 3.0 Outback wagon, automatic. What type gear oil to use, and how can I tell if it is a LSD rear differential or not. Want to make sure I have the right oil. thanks
  6. Thanks Nope do not need another bad mirror. I do miss mine. Hate looking at the black spot it left the center wish that would fade away too.
  7. You come across those speakers i could use 1, give me a price. Also could use a self dimming rear view mirror, thanks
  8. Any one know if they used McIntosh speakers with the McIntosh radio or are those just plain Subaru speakers in the doors. thanks
  9. 99 Subaru Outback SUS. 2.5 , auto trans. Rear of trans leaking at pan gasket. Was told at a shop that this is a common problem and he would not to use a new gasket but a sealer alone would stop the leak for ever.To me it would have to be a quick hardning sealer not to mix with the new trans fluid and cause me more problems..I have a new Fel-Pro gasket.but he says if I use it I would just have a leak again. Will also have him replace the filter when job is done. Just want to know what you guys think. Is he right or wrong. And if he uses the new gasket do you need a sealer on it, if so what kind would be best. thanks all
  10. file:///C:/Users/user/Downloads/P0748a.pdf <-------- Good reading on how to trouble shoot Subaru Trans problems. Thanks for all the help guys.
  11. SUBARU Automatic Transmission Solenoid A Dropping Resistor July 2, 2011. Author: Lewis Werner The SUBARU automatic transmission dropping resistor is connected in parallel with duty solenoid A. Duty solenoid A regulates the Subaru automatic transmission fluid line pressure. Like most of the transmission solenoids, duty solenoid A's duty cycle is varied by the transmission control unit (TCU) to control the line pressure. The dropping resistor works with duty solenoid A in regulating the automatic transmission fluid line pressure. This resistor keeps a certain amount of current flow through duty solenoid A during the 'OFF' portion of its duty cycle. So in other words, duty solenoid A is never fully 'OFF'. The dropping resistor is located on the right front shock tower, near the MPI (multi-port injection) fuel system dropping resistor. The photos at the right depict the Subaru automatic transmission dropping resistor. If this resistor fails open, becomes disconnected, or has its wiring severed, one result might be increased shift shock. The reasoning behind this is that without the resistor in the circuit, the line pressure may be higher, since without the current passing through solenoid A during the 'OFF' portion of its duty cycle, it will tend to close further, and thus not bleed off as much pressure from the automatic transmission fluid pump. If the resistor fails open or is disconnected, it should cause the ATF temperature lamp to flash 16 times on the next startup, since the TCU would be able to see electrically that the resistor is open. This resistor was used on the SUBARU 4EAT phase I and 4EAT phase II automatic transmissions. It may also be used on the 5EAT though I have not confirmed it. ‹ SUBARU Transmissionsup
  12. Thanks for all the replies. If this part number is a resistor for the trans can some one explain how it works for the shifting of the trans. And is there a way to test this part ????
  13. i HAVE A 99 Legacy SUS 4 dr auto 2.5 . Have had for a few weeks had hard shift to gear 3. Even some time at high speeds up a mountain. Fluid is up where it should be. No leaks.I read about a dropping resistor that mounts on the right side strut tower. Found what may be it. Has a plug to one end. Part number is A15-000-R81. Am I looking at the right part or does this have any thing to do with my trans shifting ???? Maybe by chance some one here knows what this part is by the part number. And my part seems very hot to touch when car is running.
  14. 99 Subaru Legacy SUS. Cut all 4 rotors, new pads all the way around, bleed brakes, no ABS lights on. Fluid is topped off. Why the soft pedal ??? And yes I looked for leaks in lines and found none. What is the small motor in the front right behind the side head light with all the brake lines going to it. If this is part of the ABS ?? Please explain how does it work, What the small motor does, when does it run and how to test it to make sure it works and if it has a fuse. thanks
  15. Cant answer that, try to find that relay and it shows you on YouTube how to test it. Go to YouTube type in How to check a fuel pump relay. Then you can take a short wire and make a jumper and see if you get power to the fuse and pump.
  16. From what I read Your fuel pump relay is inside the car, left drivers side, under dash, behind or above your fuse box, with a green connector going to it. Good bright flash light and a mirror should help you see. good luck cold outside, mice like to get in and chew, or a lost ground to pump
  17. Have a 2001 Outback Wagon but mine is the 3.0 . Had the same problem last year with mine. Sounds like your fuel pump. Mine died out the same way. If yours is a wagon lift the rear seat and under that black stuff they have stuck to the floor you will find bolts to the plate that covers the pump. You can check the wires there that send power to the pump. If you have someone open the gas cap and listen while you turn the key they should hear pump run. Pretty expensive to replace if you don't have deep pockets. I did mine myself. Not that hard but when mine died I had a full tank of gas. Just tried by best not to make any sparks. Inside of car smelled like raw gas for over a month. Good luck, I hope I am wrong, but that's what I think happened.
  18. Need to know how to get glove box open with out destroying the dash. First of all the lock on glove box works with the key. The problem is when I unlock it with the key the handle will not lift up to open the glove box .Wife or son broke the small plastic cover off the handle and stuck it back on with some carefully folded tape on the back side so I would not find out they broke it. As always neither one will tell on the other or tell me story of what happened to it . So how do I open it without using a crow bar and destroying the glove box door and dash ??? thanks
  19. Anyone know if they make over the window visors for a 99 Subaru Legacy SUS sedan to keep the rain from coming in ??? I searched the net with no luck . thanks
  20. Where can I get these caliper bracket bolts without paying a crazy online shipping price or dealers price ???? Part #901130011, 17mm socket bolt head. Bolt comes with lock washer. Is for 2001 Outback 3.0 VDC. All I can think of is the guy we had put struts on did not tighten caliper bolts enough and top bolt fell out somewhere down the road. Good thing I was a few feet from the house when this happend. No noise ,no warning. Just front right wheel locked up like someone hit the brake. thanks
  21. 2001 Outback 3.0 H6 vdc wagon, high miles. Engine well taken care of , new plugs, new igniters,no leaks, knocks or ticks. Oil always changed up to date, battery 1 year old, filter clean, runs great. Up to yesterday night. Parked car about 20 min. every thing was fine. Car turns over fast but no fire. Can hear fuel pump come on when gas lid is open. All fuse are good. Full tank of gas. No check engine light before turning off. So what can it be ????? Has this happend to anyone else here. Need help asap please.
  22. Not at all cheep on those gaskets,by the time you get everything from Subaru your looking at over $100.00 bucks. I got all the part numbers today. Each side has a right and left cover gasket and 3 inner gaskets to each side too and 4 half moon things like gromets. My plugs were done some time ago so dont have to buy them. thanks
  23. Thanks for the info. I found if you dont get the kit its just a mix and match on these gaskets. You will still have to go to Subaru for something that the aftermarket ones dont come with. You said you did a few of these. Did you have to use any sealer ??? thanks
