March 29, 200620 yr I went to the junk yard on monday to grab an IC but with no luck did they have one. I came across a loyal with a 3at and want wanted to see if it was 4WD because my 3at is craping out. It wasn't but when I looked under the hood to check the fluid I saw a metal dip stick on the passenger side. This is the 4WD dip stick for the diffrential oil right, so why would the 2WD car have this. I didn't pull it to check but I just wanted to know if they all were like this and if so whats there.
March 29, 200620 yr The dipstick is there because the front differential uses gear oil. On a 4wd, the additional differential is added in the rear.
March 29, 200620 yr The difference is not 2WD or 4WD it is manual or auto trans. That is the front diff dip stick on and auto transmisson. The diff takes gear lube the transmission takes ATF. The trans dip stick is on the other side. On a manual transmission the front diff and transmission share the same gearlube so there is just the one dip stick.
March 31, 200620 yr Author Oh I thought that the 2WD cars tranny could be put into a 4WD car and work ( the 4WD of course).
March 31, 200620 yr nope, 4WD is built into the tranny. IF you put a 2WD tranny into a 4WD Car, you now have a 2WD Subaru. -Brian
March 31, 200620 yr Does anyone know if a 2wd 3at can be made 4wd with a moderate amount of parts swapping?
