Zeebadoo
I have a '91 loyale wagon. Is it normal for the A/C compressor to engage when the A/C is turned off? Mine will engage periodically (as if the A/C were turned on) and it wouldn't be a big deal if I was driving a car with more than 80 HP... (I guess one benefit is that it keeps the system lubricated...) Does anybody have the same problem or know anything about this?
revbill
Is your defroster on? The defroster uses the AC to expedite the defogging process on the windsheild.
Subarian
Otherwise, I'd look for the wire from the compressor clutch grounding out somewhere.

I don't have the defroster on, so I guess I'll pop the hood and check the wire for the compressor clutch. Thanks for the tip!
hooziewhatsit
I believe I've observed the AC compressor turning on with all the settings (bilev/defrost, etc). Someday I plan to add a relay on the compressor line so I can tell it when to run/not to run.
