April 13, 200619 yr Need to know where the tail light and brake light harness is located and how to get to it. Anybody know the name or number of an Isolator Unit for adding a trailer light receptacle? I think an electronic isolator is best used. Anybody with experience on this installation?? The auto parts stores leave Subaru out. juelbedwards@webtv.net

The auto parts stores leave Subaru out. juelbedwards@webtv.net I installed the pigtail adaptor for an 05 OBW. The connector/receptacle is behind the rear driver-side trim corner panel (you'll need to remove the side floor foam panels in the cargo area to be able to reach and feel underneath the wall trim for the connector). This site carries the wiring adaptor and instructions (installation pics right on the website for your MY OBW). http://www.etrailer.com Click on 'trailer hitches' then select your year/make/model, it will the list all the hitches available for your car as well as links for the wiring adaptors (there are 2 adaptors available).
April 16, 200619 yr Why not install the OEM Subaru hitch, it comes with the light adapter, all cabling, and it looks like it belongs on the car. We had one installed on our 06 OBW LL Bean before the car left the dealer.

We had one installed on our 06 OBW LL Bean before the car left the dealer. On both OBW I own, I went aftermarket because the hitch was considerable less in price than the OEM and built beefier with higher towing specs (even though it exceeds the towing capicity of the vehicle). I agree that the OEMs generally look better installed.
May 1, 200619 yr Author Thanks boys for the good help. You wouldn't believe the wrong advice I received from some sources who should know better. For example WRONG:"right side of wheel well under the body putty on floor of cargo space!!" WRONG... Also WRONG:"behind passenger side paneling" WRONG..I found the 6 pin white plastic receptacle behind Driver's side (left) side panel. I tested it with voltmeter first and it contains all the correct signals AND 13.2 Volts Battery lead. I bought a Hopkins "Hoppy" # 43855 Isolator unit and the wire labels are the same. Haven't put it on yet as I haven't yet found a path way through the floor to the underside of car. ADVANCE Auto parts got the hoppy in one day from their warehouse. Also, I had the hitch put on by U-Haul as my dealer advised that. He said they could do it better and used the same hitch as the dealer would. Ha-Ha LoL !! The instruction sheet with the U-Haul Hitch said plainly "Lower the Exhausts NOT THE MUFFLERS" (two mufflers) The black guy doing the job ignored that and it took him 2 1/2 Hours for a 30 minute job. Can't blame him for thinking so as it looks like a cinch to lower the mufflers but that won't work. So be forewarned, fore-armed.

July 4, 200817 yr it took him 2 1/2 Hours for a 30 minute job I note that you did not want to do this "simple" job. The last stupid trailer hitch I put on a vehicle was on a Mazda MPV (Money Pit Van), it too was "simple", just bolt it up to the existing nuts welded in the frame, trouble was, after 6 years of out in the salt, and crap, there was little hope of just threading a bolt in anywhere. That "simple" hitch install turned into an ordeal. I *think* before you can constructively criticize ANYONE maybe, just maybe, you should give it "a go" yourself. Haven't put it on yet as I haven't yet found a path way through the floor to the underside of car. Efforts noted.
