tranny problems

Featured Replies

Ok here is what happened.

I have an EA81 d/r 4 spd

Did an engine swap and I had problems with getting the tranny and the engine together.

when I finally got it, I filled the gear oil and it was hard to shift into first and second.

took the BRAT to a mech thinking it was a clutch problem and he said that there is something wrong with the tranny.

I looked at the gear oil level and it was high. Can that the the source of the hard shifting? The reason I ask this is the shifting has gotten easier since the gear oil leak.

I went to my car today and I noticed a large pool of gear oil leaking from the tranny. I have yet to determine where it is coming from. Can too much gear oil cause it to spring a leak?

Thanks for looking

yes, too high gear oil level can cause hard shifting - been there personally

and yes, it can leak all over the place if the level is too high

remove the excess, and you should be fine - BTW - what gear oil did you use?

don't remember, what kind of gear oil.

I have problems mostly going into first and second at a stand still.

Is that similar to the problems that you had?

Thanks for the quick response.

actually, when I overfilled, I had trouble going from first to second in all conditions - and going from 2nd to first (which is almost impossible in best conditions) - not to be confused with the condition where it is hard to engage due to old oil - mine is a 5-speed D/R, but I think they are similar enough

you will want to use Mobil 1 75w90, or Redline NS (non-slip) because the synchros in the tranny are funny - if you use strait 80-weight or 90-weight, you may have problems engaging gears - for whatever reason, going from 1st to 2nd, or back seems tho be the hardest thing for these trannies - dunno why

if you look on search, you will probably find a plethora of info on what is the best oil to use - first step, drain the excess - then go from there

Good Luck!!!

excellent.

This is exactly what is happening. Gee.. I just spent 55 bucks on a EA81 DR tranny. Oh well time to throw that in the spare parts pile.

Let's see.. that makes it one 4spd FWD tranny, 1 4wd DR tranny, 12 wheels, etc etc etc.

Ohhh btw. I may be moving to NC in the next year. Charlotte to be specific.

Will probably be in town Aug 6th to 10th house hunting.

Will let you know what it's set in stone.

he he - you have a brat dont you? - gonna have to see that :D - the Charlotte Pull-A-Part is GREAT too - not for selection per say, but for prices ~$50 per tranny, ~$11 per rear drive axle.....

wish I could help you with the real estate around here - I can tell you that I would not particularly recomend the area immediately around the university (super low-rent district.... and some of the issues that aridse with that), but other than that, I dont have any tips - I'm new to Charlotte myself!!!

Good Luck!!!

So I am an IDIOT

I found out the cause of all of my shifting wooes.

Well while I was changing out my engine, I thought. “hey, let’s try and make a short throw shifter for my EA81.” So I took out the welder and the grinder and modified my shifter.

Well… it doesn’t cleanly engage into first b/c the shifter hits up against the shifter hole. In order for a clean shift you need to really bear down on the shifter and force the tranny over a little bit.

Put in a new shifter from Monstaru (THANKS) and good shifting.

Now if I could only get rid of the long throw and the slop.

sko - 5 speed conversion next time.....

Maybe. I'm saving up for an AA lift kit. I will probably do a 5spd swap at that time.

Will need to source a good D/R tranny.
