225/50/16 on Gen 1 Legacy wagon

Featured Replies

I'm working on a deal to get some WRX wheels with bad tires from someone locally, and found some cheap 225/50/16 tires in the paper. I calculated the diameter, and they're almost the same as the stock WRX tires. The question is... will these tires rub? Are they just too wide?

If it was an outback I would think they would fit, but on a Legacy, I think they will rub.

As long as they don't rub on the spring landing, anything else can be shifted with a 3lb hammer. test just the rim with the bald tire on a front and a back and see how it does.

My bet is that 225 with stock suspension will rub. Having said that, there are different 225, and some might be fine....

Stock STi wheels and tires rubbed on the inside of the rears on my 95 Legacy. The STi stock is 225/45R17. I was able to use a very thin spacer, something like 5mm ( I honestly don't remember) and get away with it. Of course then it rubbed the fender lip during heavy cornering. I was running crappy tires until they were bald so I didn't care about the rubbing.

I'd say minimal rubbing would happen because of the big increase in width of the tire, but I'm not an expert.

I've also got some tires here in my garage you're welcome to use if you want, just some old walmart specials my wagon came with though.
