Hamonic wind noise gone in one trip!

Featured Replies

 A few weeks ago I posted a problem with harmonic wind noise sounding like a tuning fork which I could not locate the source of . On a recent trip I started by covering different different areas on the firewall with duct tape with no results. I then moved to the bottom windshield seal covering it with duct tape with no results. I finally covered the top windsheild seal and it stopped. Apparently there is a short length of the seal which was not sealed properly. The noise was unbearable between 75 and 80 MPH. Just wanted to report back and let everyone know it is fixed. Also report the Forester XT got 27MPG average on 1555 mile round trip with no hiccups..Thanks Cobalt.

Thanks for following up, cobalt. Somewhere, sometime, someone will benefit from your "research" and solution. And that, to me, is what USMB is all about!

Looks like 1 Lucky Texan was spot on. I had similar problem after windshield was replaced but yours was not a replacement?? You should post back on your original post so others can see the result.

Very interesting ... I encountered a LOUD intermitent harmonic hum, actually more of a high-pitched raspberry, when driving across Kansas last summer. The wind was blowing 40+ from the side making it difficult to stay on I-70. I could never find the source of the sound. Since it only occurred in Kansas (not Colo. or Mo) I chalked up as bad Kansas Kharma. The windshield was replaced last winter, so the trip west will be test this summer.

Speaking of new windshields, what is with Subaru glass? The old one broke where the rear-view mirror mounts. Apparently, while removing her jacket my wife wacked the mirror and the inside ply of safety glass disintegrated and down came the mirror. I've never heard of that happening before.
