This'll seem very silly and simple, I'm sure but...

 

is there something unique about the manual transmission in the Subaru Outback Sport (Impreza, I guess)? I'm lucky to be receiving one soon, and I'm still mastering stick shift (learning in a '98 VW beetle) and someone I know that owns one is convinced that there's something uniquely difficult about learning to operate a Subaru's. I suspect that he's full of ****, but I thought I'd ask first -- is there anything I should be aware of when I start driving the thing?

Additionally, can anyone think of any links to pictures of the Outback Sport's or Impreza's gear shifter, so that I could get a more visual sense of what's coming?

The newer subarus have very 'touchy' clutches... you'll let used to it in a few days... my girlfriend's brother has a 06 STi.... you only need to move the pedel like..... 1" to get it to go

Virtually no different than any other car. Pedal pressure is lighter than an american car....some subies have chatter, but most of those are the hydraulic throwout type. Very few cable operated clutches have problems.

 

A couple days and you'll be fine.
