valve ticking??

Featured Replies

my 95 leg 2.2l has been sitting for a year waiting for a a/t. i started the car occasionally until the battery died. now i find that there is a ticking noise when i start it up. checked and added oil, still there. i can't drive it untiol i get the trans replaced but i'm worried that the engine is hurt.

suggestions on what product to use to help clean / correct my engine noise. i hear that changing the oil often will slowly clean the engine. is there something else that will help, seafoam perhaps. that's all the rage here , but seems complicated.

thanks,john

Add half a quart to a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil to the crankcase and run it a while. You might want to run it at higher RPMs for a bit- 3,000 won't hurt it a bit. Having the engine sitting has allowed varnish to build up on the lifters, and the MMO will clean them.

thanks, i'll give it a try.

if it sat for a year i wouldn't be surprised if it's a little noisey for awhile. it will probably go away. some MMO, ATF, Seafoam should do the trick. lots of oil changes. change it early the first few times, or at least i would. change it often afterwards or at least keep an eye on the color of it if you want to go beyond 3,000 miles.

doubt you'll need to but could be oil pump related as well, resealing the oil pump may help.

does it sound isolated to one cylinder or "all over" and random? if it's isolated to one cylinder then it's more likely the MMO and others will help. if it's all over and affecting them all, then it's more likely to be oil supply related. my bet is on the later. give it a little time though, they can be really noisey after sitting for awhile or a rebuild/reseal but quite with some running.

it sound like it's only one area/cylinder. one of the reasons i kept it and looked for a donor car was that i had just spent 600 on t-belt, front seals and water pump. i hope , but don't know, if the o ring? on the oil pump was done. when the tranny goes in so does the rear seal.

thanks for the input,

john

Just went through this on my '93 Legacy. There was a sharp "tak tak tak" sound from the #1 cylinder and my guess was a HLA collapsed, so:

1) Put a pint of MMO in the crankcase.

2) Warmed up engine.

3) Held engine at redline with no load for 30 seconds (the idea was to get the oil pressure as high as it would go, you might not need redline for that).

4) Let the car cool down.

5) Repeat 2,3.

The sound was gone and it hasn't come back in 800 miles' driving.
