May 28, 200619 yr I am looking for a 98-99 Impreza with 5-speed and 2.2L engine I want to know about problems to expect, what to look for when checking it out.
May 28, 200619 yr check for oil leaks (cam seals, oil pump) check for coolant leaks (water pump) check for broken axles (listen for clicking in turns) these would be the most common items to search for ask for maintenance history records to get an idea of how the car was cared for Jamie
May 28, 200619 yr Author I plan to get a '98 or '99 with around 60-80K miles, I don't anticipate many problems the last subaru I had, Loyale, developed some of these problems, like worn out axles and electronic/ignition problems I couldn'mt even figure out at around 190K miles. It had 1.8L and I hear 2.2 is better. how much of a MPG hit do you take given the 4WD feature. Someone said 10%, is that so? Is there any way to turn it off. the really neat feature is the wagon model. Hardly anybody makes wagons anymore.
May 28, 200619 yr not sure on the mpg question. As far as the ej22 motor being better than t he ea82 motor... In my opion, it is far better. If it leaks a little bit of oil, dont be to alarmed, most subarus do Now, if ur going threw a quart a day, thats not good.. Hope that helps.. Ditto on what Subie Gal said tho.
May 28, 200619 yr I have the 97' impreza 5 speed with the 2.2l and love it to death, at 76k miles I'm having no problems and its running great, and at 23-24 mpg around town the mileage aint bad. I've herd the 2.2l mileage is about the same as the 1.8l (you might get 1 more mpg on the 1.8's but w/e) However with any used manual transmission car try and see if the last owner took good care of the transmission.

Well, if u compare a ej22 to a 1.8, the HP difference is awsome 135 to 84 or what ever. Ej18 has like 105?? something like that. A lot of people will say that it is the best motor subaru ever made
