I may be a lousy mechanic, but I'm a hellova diagnostician.

The noise that started on the way up to Pine Barrens not only WAS a front wheel bearing, it was the LEFT bearing. The mechanic was impressed (I didn't tell him I had replaced the right one 15,000 miles ago) ...

The stealership wanted $385.00, and two days. I called a foriegn parts company in the area and asked for the best Subaru repair guy they knew. Georges Foriegn Car Repair did it while I was at work for $187.00.

All better now.

The rain washed the sand outta the brakes.

I'm happy.

I know of a guy who works at the Ford dealer in corvallis that is a diagnostician, be works 2 days a week and makes over a hundred grand a year. IF you are good at diagnosing stuff, it might be something to look into :-)

Awww heck, when I had my purge control solenoid valve replaced on my Legacy, I had the dealer do it. I told them I had already pulled the CEL code and ordered the valve ahead of time... They were astonished... I knew better than to pay them $60 to plug two wires together for a diagnostic...:brolleye:

damn.......385!!!!!!!! for wheel bearings!!!!!and 2 days!!!!!!!!

im appauld.....id do it for $50 and maybe less for the right soob!

heh, the hatch i bought needed a wheel bearing like no other..

We discussed a complete axle swap during the meet at the Pine Barrens. Unfortunately I live (and my lovely heated garage is) in Whitefish, Montana; while I am staying in a motel in Linthicum, Maryland and temporarily working in Pasadena (south of Baltimore).

I could just see myself pulling an axle swap in the MicroTel parking lot with my road kit! In the rain.
