Heat Shield

Featured Replies

My daughter's 2001 Forester has a loose heat shield. What is the fix?

Can it be welded, or is there a mounting bracket that can be replaced, or should the whole heat shield be replaced?

thanks.

It's a bit hit-and-miss. Sometimes replacing the bolts will do, but look for cracks on the shield. If there are any, try to strap it down with "jubilee clips" - metal bands with screw locks. (No idea what they are called across the pond.)

Welding can also be successful....get the car up on a lift and inspect.

Rip em off!!

just don't stay parked on anything dry... or flamable for long

but yeah.. i've heard of people welding them to the exhaust pipe.... heh...

How'd you get yours off? Torch?

Take it to a Subaru dealership and talk to the service manager about it. It is my opinion that Subaru is very sensitive about rattling heat shield components--my local dealer put my 97 OBW wagon that was waayyyyy out of the warranty up on the rack and did the rubber mallet bang bang twist here job on one of the heat shields that made the car sound like it was going to explode right at about 3200 RPM---and sent me on my way no charge.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I love the nail one... :-) I will do some digging around, now that I know what some of the possibilities are. I am new to the forums and appreciate being told about the "stickies" up top.

thanks again,
