head gasket, side effects ?

Featured Replies

hi a few month ago i engine over heated and i had to replace the head gasket, i dont know much about cars but i was told that something had to be taken apart 2 heads i was told something like that and then grinded and placed back...

what i would like to know is does this mean that engine will not perform the way it should does it loose power

is there anything that i can do today to improve the way the engine works

to improve the power of the car without any major cost

and can someone recommend what a good engine oil i should use at the moment it has 20/50, if i put new oil is there something i can put to clean the engine before putting new oil in

and one question how do i knwo if the gear is no good anymore what are symtoms to know i should change the gear

the car im talking about is subaru brat 1.6l 1993 manual

any tips on what should be done to bring the car back good working order is very aprecciated

thanks to all

a HG is the seal between the cyl head and the engine block. The HG keeps the cylinder (that has 160psi compression and 16,000 plus combustion pressure) the water channels and the oil gallies from mixing. The HG erodes with time due to repeated heating colloing of the block and may fail.

They took you head off and rebuilt it. This involves resurfacing (grinding) the valves, valve seats and knurling the guides. the last step stops oil burning. They also put on new valve stem seals. They check the heads for flatness and mil them so they are flat (they can warp). They check the springs and cams for wear.

This actually brings the top end of the engine back into like new condition. You will notice more power since you didnt buy it new. It is alos possible to have a very slight power increase due to the slightly higher compression from milling the heads.

Not much to imporove the way the engine works,

If the car has overheated change the oil. Go by whatever sooby recomneded for that year.

CHange the lubricants in the differnetials and transmission. The tranny may grind between shifts, especially the 2-3 shift, which is a weak spot in the tranny. Dont speed shift and you will be fine. Sometimes using redline oil will help it out.

Are you asking about the proper way to shift or when to replace the tranny? If its when to down shift, never let the engine chug or lug or strain, you must downshift. No falt answer on when the trany is scrap.

Are you having shifting problems? COuld be a clutch.

Hope that helps.

If this is a 1993 you may be better off in the new forum, or is it an 83? How many miles are on it.
