I have 0500, P1540 - it appears to be VSS2.

 

Before I replace it, I want to be sure it is bad. What electrical diagnostics should I run on the two wire wire connector that come out of the VSS

There are few things that when you get a failure code, it truly is that part, especially when it is just a single code.

No one has ever rpelaced one of these when its failed and said that wasnt the problem.

 

so go ahead and replace it

Not nessasarily Nipper. Sorry but if the spedo is still working it may just be as simple as loose screws behind the cluster.
