5 speed 97 OBS trans into a 99 Legacy?

Featured Replies

will an EJ22 transmission from a 1997 OBS swap into a 1999 Legacy Auto?

i realize all that's required for an auto to manual swap and the gearing being different (swap rear diff).

will the 99 EJ25 accept the 97 EJ22 trans?

will the ECU need to be swapped as well?

I don't recall when the change occured, but the "newer" engine/trans combo uses 6 bolts to connect the trans & engine, while the "older" style uses 4. I have heard that it shouldn't be an issue since the 4-bolt style has two dowl pins where I believe the other two bolts are.

You may want to search on nasioc, as I'm sure this has been covered.

As for the ECU, I really can't say whether they've kept things similar to the older style ECU's, and you can just jumper/un-jumper the AT/MT identifier pin.

Have you read my swap writeup?

j,

yes i read your pages, found those in a search. thanks! i was kind of hoping you'd chime in! i can't imagine it would be to complicated.

is a 1999 legacy a 2nd or 3rd generation? i think the 3rd generation had some rear diff changes or something? but that was 2000 i think.

The 99 legacy is still 2nd generation, however I don't know when the phase change occured. I have a hunch it was somewhere in the late 2nd gen legacies, but I could be wrong.
is there an easy way to tell? something to look at...a part, a sticker....etc?

i don't know anything about auto to man swap, but the 99 a/t was different electrically from the 98, more wires different connectors. also the 99 a/t model # chanced to "jeba" from the 98. my guess is it would bolt on but you'd have to change the wiring and tcu.

i recall your other posts from before john, thanks for the follow up. i remember you saying a 98 and 99 would not swap as far as automatics are concerned. but that shouldn't matter for a manual trans swap....unless the block is exceptionally different. thanks again...
