squealing constantly

Featured Replies

You guys have really helped in the past...hope you can come thru again. I have a 92 auto wagon that has started squealing squeaking at all speeds. It kind of sounds like it is coming from the passenger side, not sure if front or rear. Not when I apply brakes. All belts were replaced 2 years ago. Water pump at the same time. I am doing a short road trip Wed. and need to know if I should be concerned and take it in before I go. Also doing a long road trip in August. Will get a trip check before that. Any likely suspects spring to mind?? Thanks!

I would check the brakes first. I drove around in my wife's car trying to diagnose the squeal I heard for a few weeks while the rotors were being destroyed by my worn pads.

I thought it wasn't the brakes because it would stop on braking. Well, I was wrong.

Check that, then think about other stuff, bearings, etc.

Does it squeal/squeak while idling as well? If so, you may have a loose belt. I realize you mentioned the belts were replaced 2 years ago, but that is plenty of time for one of them to start slipping. Also, what Matt said..... ;)

Does all speeds include zero, or did you mean only when the car is rolling? I guess that would be the first question to ask...

only when the car is rolling. I will get the brakes checked. Just had the fronts done not too long ao. However, time goes by really fast and that may have been longer ago than I remember!

If the suggestions you got already dont find your problem you might want to check the u- joints on the drive shaft.

I had the same problem happen to me right after I did the brakes. What I found was that the tabs that hold the pad in the caliper were a smidge to big, causing the pads to rest against the rotor ever so slightly. I took a pass with a grinder on each of the tabs. Seems to be okay. I was told by our local parts store that this is common. I have never heard of it. But the long and short of it is my problem was that the tabs on the pad were too big. A simple shave has solved the problem. Hope this helps.
