looked through the USRM and none of the explanations matched up....anyone have the wiring diagram? ...here is a list of the wires ive got to work with...so what is what?

can anyone tell me what goes to what? like im assuming red and black are universal power and ground but what do the others go to...which ones for what speaker and for amp and whats going on? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

I can scan in the wiring diagram for the radio later today. The colors may not match up as its for an 86, but the pin positions on the connectors will be the same.

 

Just remember, Subarus use a common ground for the speakers. You will need to seperate the grounds from rear to front. Easily done by running new speaker wire to either the front (easiest), or the rear speakers. If you run it to the front, there's pink plugs behind the kick panels on either side. Just cut and splice in there.

There's the diagram. Just follow the lines (shouldn't be too difficult to figure out what goes to what).

 

cd45: You did a nice job of outlining what the aftermarket connector's colors are. Unfortunately, they're not the same colors as the stock subaru connectors.

hmmm...looks like it might be it...but do you have a color key? like what is L... have a key that explains what the abreviations are?

L = Blue

B = Black

Y = Yellow

G = Green

R = Red

W = White

Br = Brown

Lg = Light Green

Gr = Gray

 

C'mon, not that hard to figure out

uhm, consider re wiring the entire thing if you are installing an aftermarket stereo in an 87 GL... even if just for the speakers, you need to alter the factory setup to wire in an aftermarket deck anyhow. if you look thru the USRM, or do a search on stereo installs, you can find much lively discussion that was rather informative.. but between small wires, and common grounds that need to be divorced anyhow, there are good arguments for just re wiring it. Maybe use the stock power wiring, because thats easy, but the speaker wire at least would greatly benefit full replacement.. and its not SO hard, because you can use the old wire to pull new wire thru its existing channels.

was planning on re-wiring but after the wires used for the speakers and the power and ground there were still a few wires left over that I didn't want to just ignore if I needed them for something...like sending a signal to my amp for my subs and 6x9's ill have in the back

dont need no stinking wiring diagram i wired my wagon with trial and error and it works perfect with aftermarket speakers and sub and im using the stock wiring harness (No Smoking/ Fire Yet thats an acomplishment)

yah dont forget if you haev ID'd a pair of speaker wires but not which speaker, you can connect one wire to the bottom of a AA batt, and tap the other wire into the positive end, on and off, and it will tick the speaker. no harm done to speaker, either. easy ID.

Got the switched and constant 12V backwards? I think that'd keep it on all the time.

Got a VOM or a Test Light? Hook it up to the wire you have for 12V Switched, make sure it goes on and off with the key.

will do tomorrow......pulled off the plastic under the dash piece on the passangers side and half of my friggin wiring is chewed through...guess I had a furry little friend in there before I bought it....new problem now though......my clock wont turn off...is staying on even with the key out and everything...other than just unplugging it any ideas?

I would suspect that your radio not turning off and the clock not turning off are part of the same problem. Perhaps a circuit got rewired to stay on constantly?

I picked up a $6 testing light (best advice I got) and rewired. Had to bring power in from the battery. Rewired the speakers with new wire. In the end it was simpler than sorting through the existing wires and i suspect it works better as well.

yeah...ive got a test light and a pretty good DVOM....just left them up at the dealership I work at...hopefully will figure something out today...have a few dozen wires that need to be repaired that were chewed through before I can jump back on the radio though.

well after i patched up some of the wiring the rat consumed my clock is going off with the ignition now again so I think I might have solved my other problems as well...will give an udate as soon as i finish...any suggestions on running the new wiring through the rubber door grommets?

alright so its installed and running and I figured out the power on even with the key out problem...it only does it when I have something pluged into the cigarette lighter....any ideas whats up with that? but for now its all good.
