Alternator swap question... '79 Brat to '75 coupe

Featured Replies

I need to know right now, if an alternator from a '79 Brat (EA71) will work in a '75 FWD automatic coupe (EA63). Need to get a new one but I need to move it in and out of my shop under its own power.

I dont know if this will help, but I am using an alternator from a '76 EA63 on my '78 EA71 no problemo...

Russ,is the '79 from a Brat with the external diode on the back side of it?Those will work.

An alt. from a sedan or wagon, etc from '79 won't do it.

ok I'll have to give it a shot then. I have enough money left over from payday that I could go buy a new one if need be.....

Russ, have you checked with an alternator shop to see if it can be rebuilt? A rebuilt should be cheaper than a new one, and be more reliable than putting in a used one.

well here's the deal. I'm going to be putting a new alternator into it, or rebuild this one. However, the battery is dead and I can only get it to run for a few seconds sicne the fuel pump is wired to the alternator. Also, car is an auto so I can push it if need be but rather not with my messed up back and all. If I can get it outside, then I'm going to throw a cover over it and call it good for right now. My RX needs the engine put back into it and running this weekend.
