flasher in 2000 Forester

Featured Replies

I'm trying to find the flasher in a 2000 Forester. The dealer told me it was behind the instrument cluster and under the dash. I have the replacement part (square, black box with three prongs) but don't see anything that looks like this part. I have two questions:

1) Can anyone direct me to the flasher (i.e. with more specific directions than "under the driver's dash")?

2) Does the factory part look different from the replacement part that I picked up at my local parts store?

I appreciate any help you can give. I've twice pulled the instrument cluster and the plastic coverings around the steering column and below the dash. No luck yet. My wife is tired of using hand signals, and we have vehicle inspection coming up.

Thanks,

Chad

Small retangular plastic module with 3 wire plug. Just above brake pedal held by a single screw to the steering column housing.

When using turn signal, does the light not come on at all or does it just stay on, 'cause of course you could manually flash them with the signal lever until you get it fixed if the signals at least illuminate.

Thanks for the reply, but there wasn't anything attached to the steering column housing. There was a small white box next to the housing, but it wasn't the right size.

Any more ideas?

Well, that's where is was on MY02 and MY04. Since the 99 is like the 02, I thought it would be there also.

I've already done that (twice), but it's not directly behind the cluster.

If the unit is behind the instrument cluster as the dealer says it is, you may have to remove the cluster to get at it.

Thanks for all your advice. I finally found the flasher. Here's the key points:

1) If you push the hazard lights button, you can hear the flasher. You can also feel it.

2) The flasher is to the left of the steering column and directly behind the fuse box.

3) I had to remove the keyless entry box (flat, black, rectangular box. About 6x3") I needed a long shank 10 mm socket to do this (which I didn't have on hand).

4) When I removed this box, I could see the flasher to pop the clip that was holding the plug in place.

4) I didn't bother taking out the old flasher but just tied the new piece to a non-moving part.

Thanks again,

Chad
