I check it before moving or starting the car after it has been parked overnight, on a level surface. Do remeber to check it once in a while. I had a differential fail from no oil -oops.:slobber:

 

Actually, the bearings on the pinion shaft failed, letting the pinion hit the differential carrier whenever there was no load on the engine.
