Carburator switch, 84 Hitachi to 87 Hitachi

Featured Replies

Hi,

My car is an 87 GL 4x4 with an EA-81 swapped into it.

I have decided that I would like to try the carb off of the original 87 ea82 engine on my ea81 engine ( which is an 84 model solid lifter off of a 2wd vehicle )..

I am doing this because I feel that my engine is running rich, smells really gassy and I am only getting around 20mpg... and occasionally the engine dies after letting off the gas pedal and stepping on the clutch, even though it will idle steady at anything over 800rpm.

I want to know if much had changed between the two hitachi carbs, and if I will gain or lose any power, economy?

I know I am going to get replys saying Weber but I have zero budget and wanted to try out the carb I already have laying around. (unless someone wants to donate a weber :brow: )

Anyone able to tell me what if any differences I will notice?

1. EA82 carb will not fit the EA81 manifold - you will have to swap the whole manifold over. This entails some mods to the manifold to make it fit as well - there's some threads on it.

2. The EA82 Hitachi vacuum secondary is hose powered, and the hoses like to die. It's on the back of the carb.

3. The EA82 Hitachi's choke spring is junk. The end with the hook wears through and falls off leaving you with zero choke.

Other than that, if you really want to, it should flow better. The carb is bigger, and should give you a slight performance boost. Although it's so slight you may not even notice it. Manifold flows better too.

I say get a weber or SPFI. But that's me.

ah, that sucks that it wont direct swap over. Thanks for replying before I tried to do this this weekend, you just saved me a lot of frustration... I will look into swapping the whole manifold and see if it is worth it.
