87 GL wagon won't start after 4 mos

Featured Replies

Hi - My mother in law has an 87 GL wagon that has been parked in her driveway for 4-5 months. The battery was low, so I brought over a portable battery/charger. The motor turns over fine, but won't start. I removed the air intake from the carburator and poured in a little gas - the engine fires right up but only until the poured gas is used up. It seems no new gas is arriving from her 3/4 full tank. I took the gas hose off after the filter while turning the engine, but did not find any fuel pressure (just the fuel that gravity drained out of the filter...). Any ideas?

Thanks,

Matt

My guess is fuel pump and or filter, fuse etc.... spark and no fuel, no fire.

Do a search, lots of past topics of how too test etc...

also check the relay... Check for power at the pump first, if thats a minus, get after the relay... its kinda common

Matt,

To see if the fuel pump is getting power you should be able to hear it turn on for a few seconds when you turn the key from OFF to ON or RUN. Listen for a low hum in the rear of the car. If you don't hear it then try cranking the car briefly and try it again. If you don't hear anything then there would appear to be a problem with the fuel pump relay, the wiring to the pump, or the ECU. Since you are getting ignition it verifies that the fusible links are ok and making good connection in the box mounted on the coolant reservoir.

Another possibility is a clogged fuel filter. If it hasn't been replaced in a while it would be good to replace it also.
