Broken CV

Featured Replies

I blew the outer CV on my right front axel. How far can I drive it before pulling the half shalft out? Will it pop out of the joint on it's own, and jam? Or will it kinda stay in and just spin in place?

Tore the boot? Just drive around until it starts clicking and just replace the entire axle.

It depends on what you mean by "blew out". Some people might mean that they tore the boot, or that it is clicking. Others might mean that the axle spins freely in the joint... or that the axle is completely pulled out and flopping around.

Advice will, or course, depend on how severe the problem is. :)

I spun the cup in mine, on the passenger side, out at the ORV park... didn't realize it for about an hour, was driving around in some puddles and whatnot, and I realized my front wheel weren't throwing any spray... hrmmm. So I drove back, basically, the cage had shattered, the balls had departed, and the axle was just chillin in the cup making noise. I drove about 40 miles like that, got it home, pulled it out, and it ran around in 4wd for about 4 more months because I was too lazy to get a new axle. Just jerk the piece of the tranny, simple to do, 5/16 inch punch and a hammer... keep it in 4wd, you're golden.

Yes - they can pop out of the joint and "flop around". Likely it will not hurt anything too much, but there was definate evidence of "floppage" on one I had that did that. Very messy.

It was blown all the way, clicking is not blown, it's just damaged. I made it about 10 miles, the axel popped out of the joint and did floppage. Pulled over, cut the band off the inner boot, pulled the clipring, and threw the halfshaft in the back.
